In 2016, on the eve of International Women’s Day, ICICI, the leading bank of the country had introduced a programme “iWork@home”. The objective of this programme is to help its women employees to manage efficiently both their professional and personal fronts, balancing career in a proper way.
“iWork@home” takes care of women’s needs as mothers and home-makers and thereby helps them to give their best shots to their professions as well. This programme allows women employees to work from home for a year. The tenure can also be increased depending on the success of the programme. The launch of this programme is considered to be ICICI’s master stroke on gender diversity.
Although women form 48% of the country’s population, the representation of women in the workforce is much lower than men. One popular reason for this is that many women are sometimes forced to take a break or even leave their jobs, due to maternity and child care. Considering this fact is mind, Chanda Kochar, ICICI Banks’ MD & CEO, while launching the program, said, “Lack of a support system due to predominance of nuclear families, inadequate infrastructural facilities, such as crèches, and long commute time further accentuate the problem. So, for women professionals, there is a strong need for a robust support system, both at home and at work.”
To ensure the success of this programme, the bank, in association with IIT Delhi students, has developed an advanced and unique technology platform which will help the employees to work in a safe and secure operating system, along with a seamless office-like environment. Besides this, the program also has another advantage. When women managers need to travel outstation for work, they will be allowed to bring along their children (below three years) and also a caretaker. This will ensure the women managers to concentrate on their work, without the emotional stress of staying away from their children.
