There are good times and bad times but there are certain times in life that surpass both the definitions. The present time when the whole world is facing this unseen situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic is one of those difficult times which needs to be addressed diligently so that we stay mentally and emotionally well.
The other day, I was reading some really sad news about people getting anxious and depressed due to the lockdown and the mental pressure that has been created by the virus. Some people have even taken extreme steps due to the depression they suffer due to this pandemic. So the question arises how can we overcome all the anxiety and depression in this tough time?
Here are some of the steps that you can take to handle this difficult situation of life that we all are going through right now.
Refer to your past
This is not the first time that you are facing a difficult situation in your life. Yes, it might be the first of its kind that the whole world is going through along with you but you have survived a lot more difficult phases in your life. Haven’t you?
Think about those difficult times right from school and college days to that first job and relationship to marriage (or singlehood!) and its own set of problems. And how you have handled them to be here at this point of your life.
Life has thrown quite a few challenges to us all the time and we have survived them all. Not only survived, but we have also turned stronger with each event. And now here’s the mother of all challenges (till date!) but we have that something, that unknown power within us which makes us overcome each and every challenge that life has reserved for us. And this too shall pass making us even stronger, stronger than ever!
The good thing now is that while we had faced all our life challenges single-handedly, in this one we are all together, the whole world! Just think about the enormous energy of the collective consciousness of the entire mankind that can defeat anything, I mean anything!
So, should we worry about our present or future when we had such a great past to refer to?
Think about that invisible power!
The Corona virus is invisible too. But we believe it is there! Is there any other thing, some power which is invisible yet with us, all the time?
Many epidemics and pandemics have caused massive destruction to humanity often changing the course of history and yet we are here to tell the story- the story of even more developed nations and improved life conditions.
Whether they be plagues and unknown types of epidemics from ancient times of China, Athens and Sparta or the plagues of Britain and Russia of 17th and 18th century or even the flu pandemics of modern industrial age like the Spanish flu having striking similarities with present day Covid-19 pandemic, the world has seen it all.
The recent AIDS, H1N1 Swine flu pandemic and the Ebola and Zika virus epidemic are almost forgotten due to the effective treatments that have been discovered to fight them off.
The point is simple- the world is protected by the incredible scientific progression and some invisible power that can defeat any virus! Even the doctors have to ultimately place their faith in that supreme power.
Believe it, there is some invisible power much bigger and much stronger than this invisible small virus. And this power can make everything all right!
We just need to believe this. Till the time some treatment is found, we have to just exercise precautions to keep going. And we need to control our thoughts and emotions to fend off all this anxiety and depression.
Take charge of your mind! Don’t let your thoughts control you
Thoughts are not the facts. Your thoughts are the results of many things you see, hear and feel day in and day out. Those news reports, the casual talks about the diseases, the Whatsapp messages most of which are just unverified rumours, and all that negativity that is all around us. These all shape up your thoughts.
Don’t allow them to snatch away your peace of mind, stop them from pushing you towards anxiety and depression. So, how do you control your thoughts, your mind?
Prioritize your thoughts
Mind can focus on only one thing at a time. If you are thinking about some negative consequences, it will start dwelling upon that only. The threads will keep connecting and you won’t even know when you have pushed yourself in a negativity loop. You’ll imagine everything that’s wrong and that can ruin everything. Don’t let this happen.
Just when a thought comes to your mind, give it a priority score. How important it is or how positive it is on a scale of 10. The higher the number, the more you should think about it but lower the priority and you need to shake it away.
Just replace the negative thought with a positive one. Give some reason to not believe your negative thoughts.
For example, if a thought like this comes to your mind- “So many people are dying due to the virus. What if I or my family members catch it?” Just when you catch yourself thinking negatively like this, counter it with some fact you already know, like, “but the number of people who have recovered from it are far more than those who have died. Also, looking at the proportion of our country’s population, the number of people who have caught the virus is really low as compared to other countries. We have stronger immunity than others. Me and my family are taking all precautions, we are maintaining social distance and basic hygiene too. We are safe.”
Just with this positive thought, you have taken a step forward towards a greater immunity because positive thinking too boosts immunity by releasing good hormones that promote health and wellness.
It’s all in your hands- to think negative or to think positive!
Having a positive mindset is easier than you think. Here’s how to have a positive mindset!
Tell your Mind it’s not a Crisis, it’s an Opportunity!
As the mind can only focus on one thing at a time, why not make it focus on opportunities instead of crisis. How many times have you thought about learning or doing something when you get some free time?
This is the time! Just do it!
What if you can’t go out? Everything is getting online, just search it and do it.
Believe me, you’ll thank yourself for doing that course or upgrading your skills or pursuing your hobby or just spending plenty of time with your family. Help others who are in need. Just be happy doing what you love to do.
Keep the virus as well as it’s thought outside your home’s as well as your mind’s door! You are already doing enough to not let it ruin your life. Now don’t let it ruin your happiness!
Practicing gratitude is one of the best antidotes to depression and anxiety. Look for things that you can be thankful to, even in this tough time of your life. Small things like getting enough time to save yourself and your family from the virus. The people who succumbed to it in the initial phase were not lucky enough to get time. You are, your family is. Aren’t you thankful for this?
You have enough grocery and essential things to feed your family during the lockdown. There are lesser privileged people out there for whom even having a meal is a greater concern than catching the virus. Do you feel grateful for this? And do you feel grateful enough to even help those whom you can?
When you’ll put your attention on the things that are right in your life, you won’t get depressed about what’s wrong and that too for only a few days.
No situation, no condition is permanent. And this difficult time is no exception. It will change, your life will again become what you called to be a ‘normal life’ but till then enjoy the life that is at present free of all those usual stresses- those busy mornings, that maddening traffic, those deadly deadlines, those late evenings at work.
Don’t hunt for new stressors, just enjoy the small things that you had always overlooked your entire life! Relax your mind and wait for the sunshine! Every night has a sunrise to look forward to!
